Billie Jean King made a ripple
effect in women’s sports that still is making a wave today. She glitched the
sport world and beat a man who was number one in the world. In 1973 Billie Jean
King played Bobby Riggs in an exhibition match. Being named the “Battle of the
Sexes” match King beat Riggs, and won $100,000. She quoted "I
thought it would set us back 50 years if I didn't win that match. It would ruin
the women's tour and affect all women's self-esteem."
King was
the pioneer of Woman’s sports. Not just
dominating Riggs, but winning 39 Grand Slam Singles. She was the glitch that
needed to happen for woman. She set in stone that men are not all great, and
all knowing, because she beat one fair and square in front of 50 million people.
King went on to be the founder of WomenSports
Magazine, and started The Women Sport Foundation, a program dedicated to
enhancing athletic opportunities for females. For woman, we needed that one to
stand against the grain, and stick up and fight for us, that was Billie Jean
King.
